Treatment
Like the other psychological disorder, pedophilia does not have a cure. The sexual preference will not permanently disappear. However, there are treatments for this disorder that can control and minimize the “desire” of pedophilic.
Based on the studies by Yuli Grebchenko, MD, pedophilia “needs a lifetime treatment”. Some related studies also discovered that the combination of treatment between psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy is the current most effective treatment to treat one who suffered pedophilia. (Kersebaum, 2007).
The pharmacotherapy treatment includes:
-
Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors (SSRI)
-
Luteinizing Hormone Releasing Hormone (LHRH)
It reduces neural responsiveness to the stimulation of sexual visual. (Briken, 2003)
-
Leuprolide acetate (LA)
Reduce testosterone extremely low. It is dangerous, but in the meantime are effective. (Schober, 2005)
(Downey, “Inside the Mind of a Pedophile”)
The other techniques are:
-
Relapse prevention
The technique used is similar with the method used for treating addictions.
-
Behavioral interventions
Using aversion and satiation techniques to decrease sexual attraction to children.
-
Pharmacological interventions
Medication that reduces testosterone, such as Depo Provera (Medroxyprogesterone Acetate), Lupron (leuprolide Acetate), and Androcur (Cyproterone Acetate).
Psychiatric's assistance is also required to cure this disorder. In the therapy's session, it will be discussed about one’s traumatic events and experiences, that might be happened in their childhood such as abused experience by adults (can be their babysitter, families, neighbors, etc.). The therapist will let the person to share and to discuss their frustration in handling to this disorder.
Also, the assistance from community and family are necessarily required to reduce the disorder. Support from community and the love ones will encourage and motivate them to be healed.
